• The World's Fair opens in Chicago
• The Panic of 1893 is the start of a national depression
• Women were granted the right to vote in Colorado
  
• The tomato is legally declared to be a vegetable by the United States Supreme Court
• The Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, UT was dedicated
• Lizzie Bordon was acquitted
  
• America the Beautiful was written by Katharine Lee Bates
