My family seemed fairly isolated from US and world events around them. Here are just a few events from 1899 that they may or may not have been aware of.

• Peace Treaty Signed between the United States and Spain.
• The Philippine War began
• The great blizzard of 1899 effects the entire east coast, including southern Florida.
• A tornado destroyed the town of New Richmond, Wisconsin, killing 117.
• A hurricane destroyed the town of Diamond City, North Carolina
  
• Voting machines were approved for use in the US by Congress
• Mount Ranier National Park was established
• Asprin was patented
• The paperclip was patented
  
• Martha M. Place was the first woman to be executed in the electric chair.
• Gold was discovered in Nome, Alaska
• Michael Camfield died.
