Dear Cousin Annie,
Your letter in April was received in due time but answered when I did not suppose you were ever going to leave the place you were. I should judge your mother would need you at home with so much farm
I suppose you know long before this were I am. I am here with Herman.
What folks there are seem to be doing well judging by the increase there has been.
I have not much to write and what I have I have written so many times that

it seems to be old but I will tell you about our village it contains 2 stores (with living rooms above). A tavern, one dwelling house, 2 farms, a blacksmiths shop, a depot, a warehouse, but we will soon have another warehouse. Quite a place isn’t it when you come this way come and see us.
I suppose Deette writes all the news from that way so I need not. I hear from home real often about once a week.
I suppose you want to know what I am doing. Well I am doing the housework. Sarah stays in the store mostly and Herman is building picket fence just now he is going to work in the harvest field soon.

Do you keep lots of cows this summer.
Well please excuse a half sheet this is the six letter today and I am tired of writing. Write soon and tell me all the news.
How does Joseph prosper does the baby know its auntie yet.
How far do you live from Joseph’s?
Adieu
Yours Affectionately
Martha
Address
Martha J Hall
Columbia Co
Annie's only sibling, her brother Joseph Camfield, had a son, Frederick Harrison Camfield, born 29 Nov. 1874 in Michigan. I wish the letter gave the location!
I did a search for Dixon, Wisconsin and found nothing so either the fledgling town did not prosper or the name was changed to something else. Martha, her brother Herman Hall and his family returned to Lake Co, IL.

Interesting! I don't have any old letters, but I have some old postcards... one of which asks the reader (which would have been my Great Grandfather) to guess who it was on the front. It was one of his daughters, but I'm not sure which! However, I am sure he would have known :)
Too bad she didn't leave more of a clue! These letters were unknown to me for years. Maybe some for your family will turn up.
