Is Frank at home yet? I think he might have run over and let me look at him.

I am waiting patiently for the electric car to run from here to Niles and then am coming over. We have benn having an other carnival here but I did not go.

I have finished my corse of studdy but have not yet recd. the certificate they have five of my examination papers there yet. They are very slow, but of course they have so many. Well in the meane time I am geting the experience. (and some money).

Have not been to Joe's for some time. am working at the corner of Tarary avenue and sample st.s which is over by Studebakers shop so am to far from them to run over when I take my outing.

so Dr. Henderson has colapsed. I intended to send him one of my cards when I got the certificate thinking he might

need my services sometime.

I wonder what is the matter of Lib I wrote to her a long time ago and have recd. no reply. is she so bisuy that she can not write?

I suppose you have no neighbors in the old house now. I have not heard from Abb for a long time. May was to see me the week that I came here. she came over from Elkhart where she was visiting only staid about two hours. she will soon have six children if she is luckey.

Is Tamerson coming over this summer> I wish she would she could stay with me if I am at home and I should be so glad to have her. expect shall be at home next week but of corse do not know. was called to this case without any warning. well I guess this is all this time. give my love to all but keep most for yourself. write soon Toley

Toley has switched from sewing to nursing.

Mrs. Carlisle was Anna's mother-in-law, Hannah Glover Carlisle. I wonder what type of accident she had?

Anna's son Frank was living in Hartford, Michigan in 1903 and 1904. Why was he expected home? Had he been traveling or was he just expected in Buchanan for a visit?

Joe Camfield was Anna's brother.

Lib was Anna's neighbor, Elizabeth Vorhees.

Abner Robinson was Toley's brother.

I have no idea who May was but feel like I should know!

South Bend Ind.
Nov 27nd 1902

Fear Friend: have ment to write you some but am so buisy that it is hard to take time. Of corse this is the buisy season in the shop and they want me to work over time but I do not do it only once in a while when I can not very well avoid it. we have had three women to help us but they none of them suit. wish you could be here and help us. you would be better than all three of the ones we have had the work is not so hard but it takes a little common sence and some skill. I have been having some cold for a couple of weeks but it seems better to day the wind is whistleing through the crevices this evening. sounds as if we might have

page 2

some cold wether. well we have had a pleasant faul any way. I suppose you are all ready for winter. I am as near ready as I shall be this side of January. I havent any thing new and shall not have untill I get out of the shop so as to have time to make something.

I have not been over to Joes since I was home. suppose your mother is there now. well I intend to go soon. Thanks giving is at hand are you going to have turkey? there has no one invited me to dinner so I suppose I shall have to eat alone. well I am thankfull to have something to eat. as she has so much more time. Well I guess I must close for this time. with love to all I am yours,
Etoley

Mixed in with the above letter is this undated letter. I believe that the two letters were sent together. The first Anna could share with the family and the second one not.

Well Annie I expect you are wondering how I am geting on with the matter I spoke of when home. Well I am working on the second lesson. do not have half time enough for study but think will get through all wright. wish you could study with me. but I will tell you what I am going to do. I have to send the printed lessons back at the end of the course, but I want them for refferance and shall coppy them when I get out of the shop and then will send them to you and you can learn them and send them back. of corse that will not secure you the diploma but it will give you the knowledge and it may come usefull to

you some day.

There is nothing certin yet about my recieving the diploma but I intend to work hard for it and I believe I shall get it. If I do not it will be onley one more disappointment.

I did not see Barb Rose when I was home. come to the conclusion that as long as she had enlarged her business she would not care to take this up.

well good by and write soon.

your frind Toley

Privet.

Toley may not have been a relative but I've become quite fond of her and was thrilled when I learned that she had started studying nursing! I was also very saddened that she had no dinner invitation for Thanksgiving. I wonder if her niece, Amelia was still living with her?

Tamerson L Carlisle, Sept 17, 1902

Anna's still away and Tamerson writes another letter but not by choice.
Papa wants me to write, so I will. I did not intend to write again but he wants me to write to tell you to stat as long as you want to. because he is at home now. He got through last Saturday night but Tuesday and Wednesday he threshed.

Without actually saying she thinks Anna should come home she lists many reasons why she should. They hired out the laundry and then had to do the ironing. Anna's mother, Sarah Ann, "has had a very lame back for several days nearly ever since you left." Tamerson hadn't been feeling well herself and listed several arches and pains that had been troubling her. One reason listed for Anna to stay was that Tamerson had only made four loaves of bread and was looking forward to having baker's bread when it ran out.

She also included the town's sick report:
Old Mr. East is very sick. I don't know whats the matter. Old Mr. Sparks is not expected to live. I got a letter from Toley last Friday and she said. "Violet Alphont is very sick."
