Scan My Photos

I've decided to take advantage of ScanMyPhotos.com's offer of free scanning that I read about at AnceStories and Creative Gene. The offer has been extended until June 30th.

It took quite awhile to pull close to 1,000 photos out of several albums. For this offer all pictures must be 4"x6" which means they are relatively recent. I do not have negatives for all of them but many family members have either duplicates or similar ones should anything happen to my originals.

I lightly numbered the back corner of each photo so that it would be easier to get them back into the proper albums and also so I'd know when I was close to 1,000. I double checked that they were all facing the same way so that I wouldn't end up with upside down scans or scans of the backs. Per the instructions on the site I bundled them in groups of 100-125 with rubber bands.

I used a USPS one rate box. The box is a bit larger than needed but is provided free by the Post Office and I filled the empty space with newspaper. I printed the shipping label online so I get delivery conformation included for the $8.95 it will cost to send them. It will cost $19.95 for return shipping and handling so for less than $30 I'll have scans that would take me close to forever to get done on my own.

I'll send them out tomorrow and let you know when I get them back.

A Place Called Home

The 47th edition of the Carnival of Genealogy has been posted at Creative Gene. Jasia has done a super job organizing the nearly three dozen articles about places around the world. Head on over and check out all of the excellent submissions!

A mid May edition of the COG has to be about mothers and this one will focus on education.
Now it's time for a Call for Submissions! Mother's Day will be here next week but rather than just writing tributes to Mom as we have in the past I thought we'd take a little different slant this time around. The topic for the next edition of the Carnival of Genealogy is: Mom, how'd you get so smart? We'll examine our mothers' education. What schools did your mom attend? Did she graduate high school or attend the school of hard knocks? Did she attend a one room school house or was she home-schooled? Was she the first in the family to attend college? Maybe your mom took self-study courses or was an avid reader. Tell us all about how a mother figure (mother, grandmother, mother in law, godmother, etc.) in your life became so brilliant! The deadline for submissions is May 15th.

Submit your blog article to the next edition of the Carnival of Genealogy using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.
